One of the leadership principles that guides Amazon is Bias For Action. This is what they say about it.
Speed matters in business. Many decisions and actions are reversible and do not need extensive study. We value calculated risk taking.
I have benefitted immensely from having a bias for action. The reason I successfully broke into the cloud space is because of a serendipitous conversation with a friend at a barbecue. After I complained to him about having no idea on how to get a career in tech, he suggested I learn the linux command line if I wanted to improve my technical skills.
As soon as I got home I searched for youtube tutorials on Linux and this kick-started the journey that would eventually lead me to become a Senior Solutions Architect. I shudder to think about what would have happened if I had waited one more day to get started. I would most likely never have gotten started and would still be working a dead end job.
Procrastination is the killer of dreams and as we go into the New Year, I encourage you to develop a Bias For Action. Learn the Linux Command line, update your CV, apply for jobs, call your mum, schedule that appointment be your friend that you haven’t spoke to in months.
Stop putting things off and just get started!
I’ll leave you with a quote by Bradley Whitford.
Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon high, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth.
-Bradley Whitford
Wishing you a wonderful and productive New Year!
